The chess pieces have been crafted by Roy Darlington. Roy has used Additive Layer Manufacturing to create these Chess Pieces. He is one of only 2 Bentley Associates who are trained to use this process, and has been carrying it out since it was introduced to the factory in 2003.

This table has been crafted by Matt Hassal, who started out life at Bentley 10 years ago as an Apprentice. Through the successful apprentice programme Matt is very skilled in CNC machining, which was the process used to create the Bentley Wings that feature on both ends of this V8 Table.

Lewis Jones has created this one off coffee table; he is a 3rd year Bentley Apprentice and is currently studying for his Junior Foundation Degree in mechanical engineering.

One person that will have a hand on almost every wooden item that leaves the factory is Tom Cooke, a coachbuilder by trade that has been working within the Woodshop for 17 years. Tom is currently working within the lacquer facility, where the wood is given protection to help it stand the test of time – this involves sealing, intricate touching-in (by hand) of any slight imperfections, and the application of lacquer by hand.

Simon Kerr came to Bentley in 1993 as an apprentice on a 4-year program. During this time, he learnt all the trades within the Woodshop, before moving into a permanent position in the veneer area. Simon now works on a number of different projects, involving a lot of specialist veneer work and one-off marquetry designs.

Steve Pountain has crafted the beautiful watch box. He began his 18 years at Bentley with a four-year coachbuilding apprenticeship. Steve currently works as a production engineer – supporting projects, developmental work and feasibility. Working on different items, such as this watch box, helps to explore new possibilities and process ideas that can maybe one day be incorporated into production.

The Chess board was created by Nigel Mansel. Nigell joined Bentley in 1998, and moved into the Woodshop Technical Support Office following completion of his four-year apprenticeship. His main focus is quality, but also supports veneering and laser-cutting processes, and developed a laser program specifically to cut the veneers for this chess board.

Is a Team leader for project development within the Woodshop. This role involves one off production of parts, such as the pieces made for the auction. His role also includes the selection, purchase and ordering of all hardwoods into the Woodshop. Dave coordinated the creation of all the auction items in the Wood Shop.

Works as a Tool and Prototype Planning Engineer. He is responsible for Planning all the work that is manufactured in the Toolroom, and has worked at Bentley for 33 years. Tony coordinated all the Toolroom made Charity Auction pieces with regard to the feasibility, design, material specification, procurement, and finally the manufacturing process.
